Assorted images of classroom visits

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine visited Paul C. Bunn Elementary School to observe how the city schools have implemented the Science of Reading.

According to the Institute of Multi-Sensory of Education Journal, “The Science of Reading is a comprehensive body of research that encompasses years of scientific knowledge, spans across many languages, and shares the contributions of experts from relevant disciplines such as education, special education, literacy, psychology, neurology, and more.”

Governor DeWine is visiting schools across the state, with YCSD being the 11th. He had the opportunity to see firsthand the literacy practices our teachers use in the classroom and beyond.

Scholars engage with lessons meant to lead them to become successful readers. It’s a blended curriculum where they sound out words, sounds and write them to reinforce what they learned.

Governor DeWine expressed how teachers have the most critical role. He was equally impressed with the district’s teaching staff and the literacy efforts at YCSD. The Governor also commended the district’s training model, noting he had not seen that at other schools.

One of our scholars even got one-on-one time with the Governor and read to him. Earlier in the day, that scholar mistook our Executive Director of Elementary Curriculum, Aaron Bouie, as the Governor! So, team YCSD made the introduction to Governor DeWine, where he even signed our scholars Y money for school incentives.

In addition to classroom visits, Governor DeWine toured the YOUCare Dental RV powered by Quickmed, where scholars and families can make appointments for dental services.

Youngstown City Schools sincerely thanks Governor DeWine for coming to Youngstown City Schools and for supporting literacy for our scholars, and students in Ohio.
