Black History Month Graphic

Black History Month honors the sacrifices, contributions, and achievements of African Americans across the nation. Since 1976, every American president has designated February as Black History Month, with each year centering on a specific theme. For 2023, the theme is Black Resistance, which focuses on how for generations, “African Americans have resisted historic and ongoing repression in all forms.”

Schools across the district will hold celebrations and workshops in honor of Black History Month, such as in the arts with poetry and a photography exhibit, in addition to special programming.

We encourage you to read more about this year’s theme and join Youngstown City Schools in honoring Black history, not just today but every day.
