We are incredibly proud to announce that Youngstown City School District has joined a historic national effort to make Selma, Alabama, the "Butterfly Capital of the World!" As part of a unique partnership between the City of Selma and local artists, eight groups were selected to design and paint large-scale butterfly installations. Our very own Volney Rogers Elementary School was chosen to represent Youngstown on behalf of the Mahoning Valley Sojourn to the Past program!
The butterfly cutout was shipped to Youngstown, where Chaney High Schooler, Lyll, designed it. Classes at Volney Elementary then painted the butterfly, which will be shipped and showcased in an installation for people to enjoy for generations to come. The project bridges the gap between our city and the civil rights legacy of Selma, symbolizing growth, transformation, and the power of advocacy.
Thank you, Mrs. Penny Wells, Marc Ellis, Lyll, and participating classrooms at Volney, for your hard work!
