The Youngstown City School District (YCSD) is thrilled to announce the introduction of its new district-wide mascot, The Defenders, in the fall of 2026. The mascot was selected based on feedback from a community survey, in which scholar voices were heavily weighted to ensure that the vision for their school identity was represented and heard. The survey stemmed from the recent announcement that YCSD will consolidate Chaney and East Middle Schools, as well as Chaney and East High Schools.
Based on feedback from the community and further conversation with the Youngstown Board of Education, the new school names have now transitioned from Youngstown Unified to Youngstown High School and Youngstown Middle School.
The symbol of the Defender will be the owl. Indigenous to Ohio, the owl’s presence serves as a fitting representation of the Defenders’ spirit—watchful, resilient, and ready to rise above adversity. With fierce eyes and sharp insight, the Defender Owl serves as a reminder that knowledge is power and protecting it is our collective responsibility.
In collaboration with dedicated teams at the district, a powerful visual identity has been developed to bring the Defenders to life. The logo incorporates bold, symbolic colors—red, yellow, blue, white, and black—that reflect strength, unity, and diversity. The final design will be used in school branding, athletic uniforms, and throughout district communications to inspire a new era for Youngstown students, staff, and community members.
Reflecting on the power of the new mascot, YCSD Superintendent Jeremy Batchelor said, “The Defenders mascot goes beyond a name; it is a powerful symbol of strength, who we are, and who we are becoming. We are grateful for our scholars, staff, alumni, and community support, and look forward to what lies ahead for the future of Youngstown City School District.”
