In February, schools across Youngstown City School District recognized Black History month with a series of guest speakers, programs and events meant to educate about the significance of Black History, but also celebrate Black culture. Thank you to all of our scholars, community members, teachers, and staff alike who came to together and honored Black history in many ways.  

The list below is not exhaustive, but some highlights of the many Black History Month celebrations. 

  • Rope of Hope: The Responders, The Rescue, the Relief, community resource event on wellness and mental health. 
  • Impact of Black Men in Education, a conversation with Superintendent Jennings and YCSD administration.
  • Youngstown Mayor, Jamael Tito Brown, speaks to scholars at YCSD.
  • Levensky Smith, from the original cast of The Lion King on Broadway, choreographed a dance to The Lioness Hunt from the show with scholars at Paul C. Bunn Elementary. 
  • Chaney Middle School presented “The Evolution,” a time capsule of music and performance through the ages. 
  • Chaney High School African American Read-In, which was established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month.
  • Ohio Poetry Association's 2021 Poet of the Year, Quartez Harris, visited East High School to hold a poetry writing workshop and read poems from his book, "We Made it To School Alive." 
  • Choffin CTC fashion show centering on the history of Black hair.
